Just when I thought I was about to catch up on all the great new music of 2016, the tidal wave of surprise new releases happened: Beyonce. Drake. James Blake. Radiohead. Those big name acts are all huge releases that deserve their own listening sessions, but for now, let’s focus on other tracks you should not have missed so far this year.
The first section of my latest mix has a number of dance delights from the likes of buzzing producer Mura Masa, rising duo Sofi Tukker and French producers Cassius. The latter somehow managed to pair Cat Power and Beastie Boys’ Mike D on the same dance-ready track. The rest of the mix features favorites from JayeL Audio’s past like Yeasayer, St. Lucia and Frightened Rabbit, as well as sure to be new repeat listens like Lany, Airways and Gallant.
My current favorites are a toss-up between James Blake’s match made in singer-songwriter heaven “I Need A Forest Fire” with Bon Iver and the welcome return of Local Natives. Local Natives pick right up where they left off on 2013’s Hummingbird with trademark valiant harmonies on “Past Lives”. However, “I Need A Forest Fire” is a near perfect pairing that balances Blake and Vernon’s strengths in hypnotic fashion.
